Request: Develop Employee of the Month

I would like to have a Monthly Employee Appreciation Award (like employee of the month). The recipient of the award would receive something like a gift card ($25 to Red Lobster, $25 Olive Garden, Passes to Regal Movies, etc...). Could you all come up with a procedure for nominating and determining the recipient for me to review? I would like to start in September for August. Let me know. Thanks, Adam

EA item for discussion

Only two years of employees, if a different employee gets the recognition each month....

Suggest quarterly; have staff nominate a person who helped out, did a good job, or whatever that person who is nominating feels is worth recognition. [best joke at lunchtime perhaps]

If this is quarterly, then on the other months have employees participate in generating ideas that win recognition e.g. best change towards sustainability; best idea for greening up at home. I would like to have a design contest, goal being to come up with a corporate sustainability logo.

Or, if we co-sponsored Cash for Cans, best employee effort in that regard would recieve a monthly recognition.

Suggest set-up submission form on corporate web page to collect nominees or ideas, whatever we are doing that month. Adam and designated staff would have permission to view. We could publish the 'winner' on the Intranet.

In significantly larger companies, the EOM concept works because there is relative anonymity throughout the process. Such is not the case here. Plus, EOM has performance connotations that may be dirfficult to reconcile come bonus time, e.g. the staff thinks the person is great, but the person's boss doesn't. I would be more in favor of holding a series of contests as Elizabeth suggests, thus presumably reducing the potential for inner strife.

I agree...

I feel rewards for contests and recognition for good deeds is much easier to justify than something that is project-specific performance-based (if that makes sense). Plus, it's more fun and I think staff would get into it. I don't care if it's monthly if it's done in this capacity. I don't think it would be too difficult to put together a little contest every so often (mixed in with months where people are nominated for a good deed, helping beautify the office, etc.). I'm fine with quarterly as well though. At the end of the day, it's a $25 gift card to a restaurant, so I would hope staff wouldn't get all up in arms about how it is awarded.

Other Alternatives.....

I'm interested in hearing about other alternatives as well. I don't have great recollections about an EOM practice. It was very divisive at my former company, and eventually the practice was abandoned.

Have a monthly raffle where an officer draws a name at the first of the month. Should there be any extra gift cards, we can also have contests, as suggested.
