Humanitas Approved by APA to Provide Continuing Education Credits

(Silver Spring, MD --- April 8, 2009)  Today the American Psychological Association (APA) notified Humanitas, Inc., that the woman-owned small business met the stringent criteria to offer continuing education credit hours to psychologists who attend and complete Humanitas-sponsored educational programs. 

Humanitas offers a variety of educational programs, technical assistance and products to support health professionals, instructors and counselors.  Psychologists attending the 2009 Job Corps National Health and Wellness Conference during the week of April 15-19 will be the first recipients to receive 10 credits of continuing education credits from Humanitas. Job Corps is the U.S. Department of Labor’s largest residential education, training and placement program in the country and serves at-risk youth between the ages of 16 and 24.  Humanitas manages the program’s national health and wellness support. 

“We are delighted to offer our clients and other professionals continuing education credit for our training, distance learning, webinars and full range of educational programs,” said Lura Myers, Humanitas president.  “We are pleased that our Job Corps client is one of the first to benefit from this timely notification.”

Dr. Valerie Cherry, Humanitas principal mental health consultant and clinical psychologist, reiterated the importance of providing health professionals with timely information particularly when serving today’s young people.  “The numbers of youth who are struggling with mental health, drug and alcohol, bullying and violence issues is growing at such a fast pace that as professionals we need to keep current and engaged in new treatments, research and methods.  Offering continuing education credits to our clients maintains the highest standards of ethics and professionalism,” said Dr. Cherry.

Psychologists may use continuing education requirements from Humanitas to maintain professional certification.  APA will continue to monitor and assess Humanitas educational programs to maintain industry quality standards.

Attaining the continuing education credit hours is the result of a yearlong strategy at Humanitas to leverage the firm’s expertise in education, public health and training. Humanitas plans to add continuing education credit hours for its nursing , substance abuse, and other programs.  The success of the expansion is strict oversight, quality control and evaluation.   Julie Luht, Humanitas’ director of the education and training programs will monitor the new programs and will coordinate the application process to secure new continuing education designations.
