The non-profit advocacy group, National Health Council (NHC) launched an online registry that joins investigators who have meaningful, yet unfunded projects, with nongovernmental organizations looking to support medical breakthroughs. Unfunded and peer-reviewed National Institutes of Health (NIH) applications are posted with abstracts and contact information. The registry, www.healthresearchfunding.org
is recommended by the NIH deputy director for extramural research and is meant
to be “the Match.com of funding organizations,” according to Anne Geronimo,
UMD’s director for research and development.
Any researcher who has a proposal that NIH deemed worthy of
peer review, but did not fund, is eligible to post an abstract and contact
information at no cost. Only registered funding organizations, to ensure
privacy and security, can search the registry. Currently there are more
than 40 patient advocacy groups registered, including the American Cancer Society
and the Alzheimer’s Association.
